Rose Goldfish

Rose Goldfish brings you a Chinese folk religion myth of the goddess Nüwa (Nu as in nude, WA as in water). In ancient depictions of her, she had the body of a red and white snake and the head of a person. She created humans from clay, which she molded with her hands. When she was tired, she dragged a rope through the mud and flung the clay from it to create more people. She hoped to fill the world with joyful conversation. This act combines burlesque striptease with classical Chinese dance styles and fan dancing.

In this pensive, abstract act, Gold uses classical Chinese dance styles, fan dancing, and a bit of chair acro to reflect on their experiences. As a second generation Chinese immigrant, Rose Goldfish sometimes feels like they don’t completely belong in the U.S. They are not completely at home “here” or “over there”. Maybe their identity lies inbetween, somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Join Gold and look over the ocean, stars, horizon, and dive into the blue. Dream of a world liberated from borders, where our differences are understood and celebrated. And families, blood or found, are always connected.
